PETA added another item to their list of "WTF moments" by setting their sights on Mario and his Tanooki suit.

PETA added another item to their list of “WTF moments” by setting their sights on Mario and his Tanooki suit.

According to PETA, Mario promotes the wearing of fur by donning his iconic Tanooki suit. On their site, PETA claims that “Tanooki may be just a ‘suit’ in Mario games, but in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it’s OK to wear fur.”

Apparently when Mario grabs a leaf and transforms into his Tanooki form, he is sending a message to everyone that skinning animals alive and wearing fur coats is the cool thing to do. I’m not sure what universe PETA lives in, but Mario is clearly transforming into something—not skinning it.

To promote their accusations, PETA launched a website which features a Mario-esque flash game. But I warn you. Apart from being not fun at all, the game is kind of disturbing. You play a tanuki who is trying to reclaim his stolen skin from Mario, who is flying in the air wearing a tanuki cape dripping with blood. And to top it off, the game has blood-stained coins and blood-splattered scenery.Nintendo has issued a response to PETA’s claims via Eurogamer:

“Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games. These have included a frog, a penguin, a balloon and even a metallic version of himself. These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play. The different forms that Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves.”

I really hope PETA doesn’t actually believe their anti-Mario campaign and are just trying to create some publicity. It seems like PETA are just looking for things to hate on. Because, as everyone knows, haters gonna hate.

In an interview with Weekly Play News, video game mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto said he plays games for up to ten hours a day.

Miyamoto plays the games at Nintendo headquarters as a part of his job. While he plays them he is constantly writing down his opinions about the game to give to the director. Recently Miyamoto has been working on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, playing it for up to ten hours a day and only stopping for meetings.

Miyamoto said he sometimes plays up to seven games at a time, though he usually focuses on three games a year.

I’m pretty sure most people who read this will immediately be jealous of his job. I guess it’s just one of the perks of being one of the best game developers ever, eh?

Skyrim director Todd Howard talked with Wired.com about Skyrim's Radiant quest system.

In an interview on Wired.com, Skyrim director Todd Howard talked about the game’s Radiant quest system.

The Radiant quests system creates an unlimited number of quests based on your current progression in the game. The player may be sent to kill a monster in an unexplored area of the world or be asked to collect a rare plant. These quests are randomly generated and the player will never run out. The new questing system will also allow players to obtain unlimited quests from each of the game’s factions. After you complete the core quests for a specific faction, random quests will be generated indefinitely.

This system gives players a chance to explore the massive world of Skyrim with an objective. “The world is probably the one thing that sets [Skyrim] apart from other games,” said Howard, “It feels really real for what it is… It’s just fun to explore.”

So if you were worried about running out of things to do in Skyrim, you should feel a lot better. Because, you know, you can play the game forever.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will hit shelves November 11, 2011.

It looks like Zelda fans have something to look forward to after the release of Skyward Sword.

In an interview with Portuguese video game site MyGames, video game producer Eiji Aonuma said that he is working on a new Zelda for the 3DS.

“We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS. We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.”

Also discussed was a remake of Majora’s Mask for the 3DS. When asked about the remake, Aonuma said, “It’s something I’m asked about often and I assure you that it is something I’ve spoken to Miyamoto about.”

I’m actually pretty excited to see what Aonuma has in store. A complete revamping of the Zelda handheld franchise might make some people a but worried, but I welcome it.
