Star Fox 64 3D Title

Review: Star Fox 64 3D

3DS

Okay, I’m sold. I don’t own a 3D TV—probably never will. I’ve seen exactly two 3D films in theaters; they were both awful, and the 3D was mostly just unpleasant. Yes, one of those was Avatar. I was originally disappointed when the 3DS was announced. I take my disappointment in that last part back. The 3DS is more than a gimmick as evidenced in the truly great Star Fox 64 3D.

Review: Bastion makes me love indie arcade games even more

Games like this make me wonder if XBLA and PSN are going to be the preferred outlet for new games, especially since independent game developers can distribute them so much easier. Games like this also remind me that there are more to games than hyper-realistic graphics and expansive sandbox environments—something quite a few indie game developers understand.

Games like Bastion make me happy.Bastion Review :: Pretty View Continue Reading

Review: Resistance 3, or Why Killing Aliens Always Kicks Ass

PS3

Well, Resistance is over. I know, there’s already rumor of a non-Insomniac Resistance 4 title, and Resistance: Burning Skies has already been announced—and shown, but really Resistance is over.  Don’t worry kids; remember this was bound to happen eventually. Your favorite PS3 series needed to be finished someday. Now, you probably want to know if Resistance ends well with a good final entry. It does.

Resistance 3 brings a new protagonist to play as, Joseph Capelli. You know, the guy who blew Nathan Hale’s brains right out in Resistance 2. The four years following Resistance 2 have been years of change for Joe. He has been kicked out of the organized military, got married, had a kid, promised to live the rest of his life in a Chimera conquered earth in happiness. This promise, of course, doesn’t hold. Joe gets pulled into a journey away from his wife and kid to shut down a Chimeran tower threatening to permanently freeze the earth. Resistance 3, without saying anything further on the story, is a road trip game. And you need to know: the story works. Actually, the story of Resistance 3 rules. I couldn’t have hoped for a better tale to bring Resistance to a close, and you won’t be disappointed.

Joe is at least as cool as Hale

Zelda Title 1

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is great, but it’s been outdone by other Zeldas

3DS

When I was a teenager, I was stuck choosing between a PlayStation and a Nintendo 64. I made the tough decision to play Final Fantasy on Sony’s console at the opportunity cost of Mario and Zelda and Donkey Kong. So when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time originally came out, I didn’t get to play it. In fact, I hadn’t played Ocarina—despite owning the two Gamecube releases—until it came out with a 3D added to the end of its title on the 3DS. I know, you’re thinking I’m the wrong person to review this Zelda considering my absolute lack of experience. But: I’m not going to do a retro review or compare it to the original. I’m going to give Ocarina 3D a review appropriate for today as though it was new; because, to me, it is.

Could I purchase a copy of Ocarina 3D please?

Dead or Alive: Dimensions brings a lot more to the table than 3D boobs

3DS

The 3DS has two fighters out right now, Street Fighter 4 and Dead or Alive: Dimensions. They’re dramatically different and excellent fighters, and for fans of both games, picking between the two may be tough. For me, I’d prefer a new Dead or Alive to a rehash on a fighter I already own a few renditions of.

For those who haven’t played a Dead or Alive game, it’s a fast and tight fighter, and Dead or Alive: Dimensions is a great entry point. The essentials are relatively basic with only four buttons to punch, kick, block or counter, and throw. New players will be able to pick up and button mash a few victories quickly, but with the game’s broad number of combos, complex counter system, and balance between fast and strong characters, Dead or Alive: Dimensions has a lot of hardcore play to offer. For veteran Dead or Alive players, this is not at all a reinvention, but yet another tuning of the classic fighter, and a complete portable translation without sacrificing any of the fighting system.
