PETA says Mario games promote fur

PETA claims Mario is pro-fur

3DS

PETA added another item to their list of “WTF moments” by setting their sights on Mario and his Tanooki suit.

According to PETA, Mario promotes the wearing of fur by donning his iconic Tanooki suit. On their site, PETA claims that “Tanooki may be just a ‘suit’ in Mario games, but in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it’s OK to wear fur.” Continue Reading

New Legend of Zelda for the 3DS

New Zelda game coming to the 3DS

3DS

It looks like Zelda fans have something to look forward to after the release of Skyward Sword.

In an interview with Portuguese video game site MyGames, video game producer Eiji Aonuma said that he is working on a new Zelda for the 3DS.

“We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS. We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.”

Also discussed was a remake of Majora’s Mask for the 3DS. When asked about the remake, Aonuma said, “It’s something I’m asked about often and I assure you that it is something I’ve spoken to Miyamoto about.”

I’m actually pretty excited to see what Aonuma has in store. A complete revamping of the Zelda handheld franchise might make some people a but worried, but I welcome it.

Resident Evil: Revelations

Resident Evil: Revelations gets release date

3DS

Capcom today announced a release date for Resident Evil: Revelations for the Nintendo 3DS.

Resident Evil: Revelations is the 8th game in the Resident Evil franchise and is set between Resident Evil 4 and 5. Four characters have been confirmed: Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and BSAA agents Parker Luciani and Jessica Sherawat. Most of the action takes place on a cruise ship where an outbreak of the T-Abyss occurred.

The 3DS title is slated to be released in North America on February 7, 2011.

Star Fox 64 3D Title

Review: Star Fox 64 3D

3DS

Okay, I’m sold. I don’t own a 3D TV—probably never will. I’ve seen exactly two 3D films in theaters; they were both awful, and the 3D was mostly just unpleasant. Yes, one of those was Avatar. I was originally disappointed when the 3DS was announced. I take my disappointment in that last part back. The 3DS is more than a gimmick as evidenced in the truly great Star Fox 64 3D.

Fire Emblem 3DS announced!

3DS

Nintendo announced a new Fire Emblem title during their 3DS conference today. There are few details and no release date, but apparently the new game will break some new ground for a Fire Emblem game. Hopefully this doesn’t mean a US version of Fire Emblem: Hero of Light and Shadow for the DS is canned.

A video was shown of the new title. Here is the first available screen shot:

Zelda Title 1

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is great, but it’s been outdone by other Zeldas

3DS

When I was a teenager, I was stuck choosing between a PlayStation and a Nintendo 64. I made the tough decision to play Final Fantasy on Sony’s console at the opportunity cost of Mario and Zelda and Donkey Kong. So when The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time originally came out, I didn’t get to play it. In fact, I hadn’t played Ocarina—despite owning the two Gamecube releases—until it came out with a 3D added to the end of its title on the 3DS. I know, you’re thinking I’m the wrong person to review this Zelda considering my absolute lack of experience. But: I’m not going to do a retro review or compare it to the original. I’m going to give Ocarina 3D a review appropriate for today as though it was new; because, to me, it is.

Could I purchase a copy of Ocarina 3D please?

Dead or Alive Heading

Dead or Alive: Dimensions brings a lot more to the table than 3D boobs

3DS

The 3DS has two fighters out right now, Street Fighter 4 and Dead or Alive: Dimensions. They’re dramatically different and excellent fighters, and for fans of both games, picking between the two may be tough. For me, I’d prefer a new Dead or Alive to a rehash on a fighter I already own a few renditions of.

For those who haven’t played a Dead or Alive game, it’s a fast and tight fighter, and Dead or Alive: Dimensions is a great entry point. The essentials are relatively basic with only four buttons to punch, kick, block or counter, and throw. New players will be able to pick up and button mash a few victories quickly, but with the game’s broad number of combos, complex counter system, and balance between fast and strong characters, Dead or Alive: Dimensions has a lot of hardcore play to offer. For veteran Dead or Alive players, this is not at all a reinvention, but yet another tuning of the classic fighter, and a complete portable translation without sacrificing any of the fighting system.

Amazon's Summer Road Trip Handheld Gaming Event

Amazon’s handheld game sale just in time for 3DS price drop

Amazon.com is having a “Summer Road Trip Handheld Gaming Event” just in time for the 3DS price drop at stores like Walmart and Target. Coincidence? I think not. And it’s not just 3DS titles that are on sale. Amazon is offering discounts on all handheld games. (Don’t worry, these aren’t those obscure titles that end up sandwiched between the 17 copies of Madden NFL in the EB Games trade-in bin.)

Amazon has some solid titles for sale including Final Fantasy IV (PSP and DS versions), Chrono Trigger (DS), Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS), Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP), Dissidia 012 [duodecim] (DS), and Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (3DS).

The price reduction is also pretty awesome. Amazon has reduced some titles as much as 50%, putting their cost at under $10. I don’t know about you, but I am going to take advantage of this handheld sale.
